Richard Thomas

George Martin Lane Professor of Classics, Harvard University

Richard Thomas is George Martin Lane Professor of Classics at Harvard University. Born in London and brought up in Auckland, New Zealand, he did his Ph.D. at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Since 1977 he has taught on ancient Greek and Roman literature, and on the reception of classical literature of the last two millennia, including in the works of Dante, Milton and Bob Dylan, on whom he has taught a freshman seminar every four years since 2004. He has written several books and more than 100 articles on classical subjects, and is the author of Why Bob Dylan Matters (Dey St Books, 2017).
